Advances in laser skin treatment

Lasers for the treatment of skin were introduced in the early 90s. The earlier lasers were nano lasers whereas the new ones are pico lasers.  ‘Nanosecond’ and ‘picosecond’ are measures of time. A nanosecond is one thousand-millionth of a second and a picosecond is 1000 times faster ie one trillionth of a second.

Lasers have many uses, foremost among them being: removal of tattoos; repair of acne scars; and removing wrinkles and other marks of aging. The old nano lasers were a great improvement on surgical and other invasive procedures but themselves had deficiencies: they were ineffective in the removal of some categories of tattoos, they could cause hot spots and hence pain and hyperpigmentation; and they could require many treatments to produce an acceptable result.

East Canberra GP has purchased the Discovery Pico Plus Laser System, manufactured by Quanta Systems . Founded in 1985, Quanta Systems became part of the El.En. Group in 2004 and was listed on the Italian Stock Exchange. El.En Group is a leading world manufacturer of laser technology for industrial, medical and restoration uses. Quanta Systems has installed thousands of laser devices all over the world.

The Discovery Pico Plus Laser is a big advance on the earlier lasers.  It comes with both nano and pico functionality which makes it much more effective in removing tattoos.  Because its pulse of energy is delivered at such high speed (one thousand-millionth of a second) there is less heat on the skin so it is both more comfortable and produces quicker results.

What to expect

It is imperative that all our new patients have an initial consultation before any treatment, even if they already have a clear idea of what they would like performed. You will be requested to complete paperwork where basic medical information is collected.

After these formalities, we can then proceed to the face-to-face part of the consultation. We will listen to your concerns and learn about you, examine your requirements and determine the best path forward. We can discuss the treatment options for now and for the future.

The entire process takes 15-30mins

Fees: $100 initial assessment appointment (Not Medicare Rebatable). This can be used towards the cost of your treatment.

Why this is important

We appreciate that many potential new patients have had treatments elsewhere, or have researched certain treatments and would like to book in directly for these treatments. However, all our new patients have to undergo a full consultation and assessment first. We want to make sure that we understand what your needs are and that what we can offer you meets your requirements.
