Consultant Physician – Infectious Diseases & Internal Medicine

Dr Fabian Chiong is a dual-trained consultant physician in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine. He holds staff specialist appointments at The Canberra Hospital and North Canberra Public Hospital and has admitting and consulting privileges at National Capital Private Hospital, Calvary Bruce Private Hospital, and Calvary John James Private Hospital. He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University Medical School.

Dr Chiong completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and undertook most of his specialist training across several major tertiary centres including Austin Health (Melbourne), The Prince of Wales Hospital (Sydney), and John Hunter Hospital (Newcastle).

He has broad clinical expertise in managing complex infectious diseases and internal medicine conditions. His areas of special interest in infectious diseases include:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections – including recurrent Staphylococcus aureus infections

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis

  • Complex lung infections – fungal & non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections

  • Opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients

  • Fevers of unknown origin

  • Long COVID and post-viral syndromes

  • Latent tuberculosis infection

Within internal medicine, Dr Chiong has a particular interest in rheumatic diseases, vasculitis, and palliative care, and is actively involved in perioperative medical care.

Dr Chiong is committed to patient-centred care and believes strongly in clear, compassionate communication with patients and their families. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Cantonese, he brings a culturally sensitive and inclusive approach to his clinical practice.

Outside of medicine, Dr Chiong enjoys playing table tennis and badminton.
